CHEE 330: Heat & Mass Transfer

Site Up-date: 01 Sept. 2011

Introduction

This course on the engineering science aspects of heat and mass transfer is one of the corner stones of chemical engineering and engineering chemistry. The principal objective of the course is to give you the necessary tools to help you design and operate different processes and unit operations later in your career. You will hopefully see the analogies between heat transfer and mass transfer (there are indeed many similarities), and learn to think of real problems in terms of both transient and steady state modes of operation, and to get a feel for temperature and concentration gradients in different situations. It is also hoped that you will learn how to set-up and solve mathematical representations of certain classes of problems, and at the same time develop your "engineering judgement" that will help you to reduce what looks like a complext problem into a manageable form.

The Text Book is available in the bookstore and is called:

"Selected Chapters from Seader (Separation Process Principles) and Incropera (Fundamentals of Heat and Mass Transfer). CHEE 330

As the name suggests it is a compendium of a limited number of chapters from two hard cover (heavy and expensive) texts. Please note that exams will be set assuming that you have the soft cover text mentioned above. It is listed as mandatory. If you have acquired hard copies of the individual texts and prefer to use them, you are welcome to do so instead.

Additional information available on the official course Moodle site. Please note that this page is intended as an informal guide to the course. The official course website is the Moodle site.

Evaluation

There are 2 in-class tests, each worth 20% of the final mark (the rest being the final). Each test is one hour in duration.

Test 1: Friday October 15th at 2:30 p.m. in HUM 102

Test 2: Friday November 19th at 2:30 p.m. in HUM 102

You are to bring your text, calculator and 5 pages of notes (written front and back if you like). Nothing else! For those of you who have e-copies (or other) of the text and you want to bring in print-outs please see me to get the copies initialed BEFORE the tests.

For those of you requiring special accomodations, please let me know as soon as possible so that we can arrange the appropriate rooms etc. Otherwise, I expect that there will be no conflicts in timetables since the exams are scheduled during the class slot.

  • Note: You MUST PASS the FINAL EXAM to pass the course.

Course Lecture Notes, additional reading and ALL COURSE ANNOUNCEMENTS are available on the Queen's Moodle page: https://moodle.queensu.ca
