Superpro tutorial

Objectives: The design project provides an opportunity to examine an overall biologically-based process in more detail than class time permits. It is expected that students develop a sense of the complexity of a bio-process, and begin to identify important unit operations and the role that each unit operation plays in the process. The design project, therefore, will serve two purposes. The first objective is to outline a biologically based process, including upstream and downstream unit operations. This will be conducted using SuperPro Designer software. Most operational parameters will be provided as a starting point. You should become familiar with the manipulation of SuperPro, but more importantly develop an understanding of what each of the unit operations contribute to the overall process.

The second objective is to undertake a more detailed design on one of the unit operations in the process. You will select/assigned one of the units, then work with the unit within the process, to establish broad operating parameters or flows for the unit, or constraints on its operation. It will be necessary to do some research on the unit to understand in depth its manner of operation, and to be able to completely specify the unit, in terms of capacity, size, efficiency, operational parameters, suppliers, costing, and whatever else may be appropriate. A complete specification of the unit operation is then required, within the operating parameters of the process as specified in your first tutorial. A final project submission will consist of a process flow sheet, and a description and specifications on the assigned unit operation. Project reports can/must be brief, but must demonstrate a good understanding of the process and the assigned unit operation. A good way of determining process understanding would be to show how your stream outputs vary with respect to different inlet conditions or how changing your assigned unit’s specification vary stream outputs. A summary of important stream inputs/outputs should be included and discussed.

In your design, you should also consider alternative unit operations and consider the advantages/disadvantages of the alternatives in comparison to the unit that you are working on.
