Biochemical Engineering

The research is diverse and covers many aspects of biological and biochemical engineering. Much of the work is multi-disciplinary, bringing in concepts from chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, biology and physiology. This work therefore involves collaboration with researchers in biology, biochemistry, cell biology, mechanical engineering, environmental microbiology and chemistry.

Research efforts include the design, modeling and operation of novel multiphase (partitioning) bioreactors for environmental and biotechnological applications, microencapsulation technologies for drug delivery and bioprocesses, the development of materials containing natural products as inexpensive building supplies and the biomimicry of natural composites.

Facilities include a variety of bench-scale bioreactors, large-scale bioreactors, and materials characterization equipment.
