The Department of Chemical Engineering functions as one unit, offering the undergraduate programs in Chemical Engineering and Engineering Chemistry and the graduate program in Chemical Engineering. Technical and Administrative support staff report to the Department Administrator, who in turn reports to the Department Head. The Department currently employs nine full-time support staff, of which five are administrative support and four are technical staff.

Administrative Support

The administrative support staff is responsible for the smooth operation of all facets of the Department, including organizing events, managing students of the undergraduate and graduate programs, providing financial and administrative support and managing physical facilities.

Technical Staff

The Department is well served by two chemical technologists and an Instrumentation Manager. The chemical technologists provide front-line support to students and maintain and set-up the undergraduate laboratory experiments. The chemical technologists also monitor safety and work with faculty to develop new laboratory experiments.

The Instrumentation Manager oversees the Polymer Characterization facility and provides assistance to graduate students and other researchers in using analytical equipment and in developing experiments and protocols.

The Department's information technology (IT) needs are served by the Computer Systems Administrator who helps install software, configure systems, and purchase, set up and troubleshoot new and existing computer systems. The Computer Systems Administrator is also responsible for supporting and maintaining the computer cluster, including planning for computer equipment replacement, supporting the mail, web and file servers for the department and liaising with the central university IT Services department and the central Applied Science IT group. Our Computer Systems Administrator has developed and instituted an "evergreen" plan where faculty and other researchers can lease computers of varying standardized configurations. Such an approach can help manage computing costs over a time horizon, but more importantly it also makes it easier to provide computer support to a smaller range of computers. The evergreen plan is starting to be adopted by faculty in the department.
