Professor Jackson is currently involved in a project related to "Process Compression". The specific project funded by NSERC as a Strategic grant is the application of "Catalytic Distillation" technology to selective oxy-carbonylation and trans-esterification. This work is directed toward development of diesel fuel additives which may significantly ameliorate the problems caused by diesel exhaust. Catalytic distillation is the most prominent example of process compression where the overall system of a manufacturing process is critically examined in order to integrate unit operations in such a way as to increase yields, reduce the production of undesirable by-products and to enhance energy efficiency. Although driven to a large extent by economic factors there is also a significant potential to reduce adverse environmental impact.
