Areas of Expertise
The significant academic and industrial experience of Dr. Barz has been acquired in areas encompassing both Mechanical and Chemical Engineering subjects. Dr. Barz worked as a laboratory engineer in a Mercedes Benz endowed fuel cells lab for five years and gained much professional experience in Electrochemical Engineering. This experience is not limited to the electrochemical reactor (i.e. Fuel Cell, Batteries, and Electrolysers) but also includes the upstream process stages such as reformers and purification units. Thereafter, his interests have been focused on the development of Lab-on-Chip Technologies including research on Microfluidics, Transport Mechanisms, and Surface & Interface Phenomena. The research consists, on one hand, of mathematical modeling and numerical simulations. On the other hand, his research always includes experiments to verify the theoretical models and assumptions that have been developed.
Current Research Interests
- Miniaturized power sources for Lab-on-Chip and Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) devices
- Electrokinetic phenomena in non-polar liquids
- Micro chemical and electrochemical reactors for energy conversion
- Microfluidics
