Program Goals and Learning Objectives - Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Program
In keeping with the vision of the Department of Chemical Engineering, we pursue understanding beyond the limitations of existing knowledge, ideology, and disciplinary structure. We affirm the value to individuals and society of the cultivation and enrichment of the human mind and spirit. Our faculty, students, alumni and staff strive toward these objectives in a context of freedom with responsibility. We foster initiative, integrity and excellence in an environment of collegiality, civility and responsible stewardship.
Our program educational objectives are consistent with the goals of Queen's University and its Engineering Department, and are designed to meet the needs of our constituents: our graduates, the employers of our graduates, the graduate study programs that our graduates enter and society in general.
Objective 1
To teach our students to analyze and design chemical processes that span molecular to macroscopic scales. To this end, objectives of the Chemical Engineering Undergraduate program are to provide students:
- with a solid foundation in basic scientific and engineering principles, while allowing specialization in applied chemistry, environmental and biochemical/biomedical engineering, process control and applied mathematics
- with relevant experience using laboratory experiments and expertise using statistical tools for analyzing process data and designing experiments aimed at improving process operation and product quality
- with up-to-date computer software tools for chemical process simulation, analysis, design and control
- with an appreciation of the importance of economic, safety and environmental objectives in chemical process design optimization and control and that our graduates have the required skills to accomplish these objectives
- with the required design skills, engineering knowledge, communication skills, and exposure to problem-based learning and team-work to function as capable chemical engineers in industry
- with preparation for graduate studies
- with programs that meet the requirements of the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board
Objective 2
To teach our students the interpersonal skills required in a professional environment. To this end, our students will demonstrate the following:
- Ability to accomplish engineering goals through teamwork
- Ability to lead a team, allocate tasks and assemble results
- Ability to communicate effectively by written, graphical and spoken means
Objective 3
To provide a liberal education in humanities and history. To this end, our students will demonstrate the following:
- Understanding and appreciation of cultural aspects of society
- Ability to assess the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context
- Understanding of professional and ethical responsibility of engineering practice
- Knowledge of contemporary issues
Objective 4
To create scholars and professionals. To this end, our students will demonstrate the following:
- Commitment to excellence and integrity
- Confidence in self-instruction as a preparation for life-long learning
- Sense of duty to their professional community
