Research Interests

The micro- and nanoencapsulation of biologically active materials enables stabilization, retention, immunoprotection, controlled or targeted delivery, and cell growth in a protected environment. Cells, tissues and bioactives that we have experience with include mammalian cells, microorganisms, enzymes, nucleotides, genomic DNA, therapeutic peptides and growth factors, and molecular-targeting therapeutics directed toward growth factor receptors. As tissues and biologicals are labile, encapsulation matrix/membrane materials and methods often involve use of natural polymers such as polysaccharides and proteins, thus avoiding the use of solvents, pH extremes and highly reactive polymerization conditions. The control of polymer matrix/membrane properties achieve specific therapeutic goals, such as bioactive retention and protection in the gastrointestinal tract, mucoadhesion and translocation across the intestinal membrane, and thus oral delivery of a protein-based drug as an example.

This research is interdisciplinary and collaborative, thus graduate students and researchers have opportunity to conduct research in collaborating labs. Recent and active research areas are listed below, with names of collaborators.
